A native, medium to large shrub that can reach 12 feet tall on favorable sites. A true riparian plant found only in wet areas between elevations of 4000 and 9800 feet. Its bright red stems are easily noticeable in the winter. Has clusters of white flowers in the summer. Upland game birds, big game, songbirds, and small mammals all use parts of this plant as a food source. Must be planted on sites near water.
