A native, deciduous shrub that grows 4-6 feet tall and forms large clumps. Grows on dry, alkaline, or high water table sites between 4000 and 7000 feet. It is very cold hardy and drought resistant. Foliage assumes brilliant fall coloring. Also known as squawbush and skunkbrush, this species is moderately utilized as a forage shrub and also serves as excellent cover for game birds and small mammals.
