A large, spreading shrub which was introduced from Asia. Branches are drooping and are covered with small spines. Clusters of small white flowers bloom in late spring and form fruit which persist on plant into winter season providing food for songbirds and upland game birds. Does not spread from root stalks as Woods rose does. Only moderately tolerant of alkaline soils. Its 4 to 10 foot height serves as an excellent cover source for birds and small mammals. Also adaptable for erosion control. Elevation range exists between 3000 and 6000 feet.
