A shrub or small tree which is common in Utahs stream bottoms and moist hillsides. It grows well between 4000 and 8000 foot elevations. The fruit resembles small cherries and is heavily utilized by wildlife. The leaves and stems are browsed by big game throughout the year. Usually grows as a thicket-forming shrub because of its root sprouting abilities. Attains heights up to 20 feet. Requires irrigation on drier sites but cannot tolerate poor drainage or high water tables for extended periods of time.
