Also called dwarf maple, this small, multi-stemmed tree may reach 20 feet in height, but often stays small due to mule deer browsing in the wilds. Common along mountain stream courses and moist hillsides between 5000' and 8000'. Identified by its red twigs, buds, and leaf stalks. Leaves turn a pale yellow in the fall.
